Litton Das Named Bangladesh T20I Captain for UAE and Pakistan Series; Shanto, Hridoy Return

Bangladesh Cricket Board has officially appointed wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as the new T20I captain for the upcoming seven-match away series against the UAE and Pakistan in May-June 2025. Offspinner Mahedi Hasan will serve as Litton’s deputy.

Litton takes over the leadership role from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who stepped down earlier this year. The 30-year-old previously led Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series against the West Indies in December, where the team achieved a clean sweep in Shanto’s absence due to a hamstring injury.

Though Litton has previously captained Bangladesh in one Test, seven ODIs, and four T20Is, this marks his first appointment as full-time captain in any format. He recently recovered from a finger injury that ruled him out of the 2025 Pakistan Super League, where he was signed with Karachi Kings.

Shanto, meanwhile, returns to the T20I squad alongside Towhid Hridoy, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam. Hridoy missed the West Indies series due to injury, while Mustafizur was unavailable for personal reasons.

The selectors have notably left out Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ripon Mondol, and Taskin Ahmed. Taskin is currently recovering from an ankle injury. Mehidy’s omission is somewhat unexpected, considering his recent involvement in Bangladesh’s leadership group.

Bangladesh will play two T20Is against the UAE in Sharjah on May 17 and 19, before flying to Pakistan for a five-match T20I series starting on May 25, concluding on June 3.
