ICC Seeks Clarity from Cricket Canada Over CEO Salman Khan's Fraud Allegations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally asked Cricket Canada (CC) to provide further information regarding theft and fraud charges filed against its recently appointed CEO, Salman Khan. The request comes after Calgary Police charged Khan in March in connection with alleged financial misconduct that occurred during his tenure as president of the Calgary and District Cricket League (CDCL) between 2014 and 2016.

According to the ICC, the allegations involve the misappropriation of approximately CAD $200,000, reportedly committed by Khan and the CDCL’s treasurer, who has also been charged. While the charges are yet to be tested in court, the ICC is taking a proactive approach to determine the potential governance implications.

In a letter signed by William Glenwright, the ICC’s General Manager of Development, the global governing body requested Cricket Canada to clarify four key points:

  1. The process followed to appoint Salman Khan as CEO.

  2. Whether any board members were aware of the allegations during the hiring process.

  3. The timeline of when Cricket Canada became aware of the charges.

  4. What, if any, actions the board has taken in response.

The ICC stressed that its current communication is a fact-finding exercise, but noted that the issue could intersect with its Code of Ethics. Section 2.2.3.3 of the code, which mandates full disclosure of any matter that could impact decision-making at ICC Board level, may be relevant as the matter progresses.

Khan, who was named CEO in January, has publicly denied all charges. In a Facebook statement from March, he called the allegations “completely false” and insisted he had never been arrested, detained, or placed on bail.

“They have nothing to prove against me,” Khan wrote. “In seven years, they were not able to prove anything in the civil case, and certainly not in any criminal case. I have over 21 transcripts, with the complainant even admitting that everything was false. I’m not worried at all. I’m ready to fight just like I’ve been doing for the past eight years.”

Despite Khan’s denials, the charges have cast a shadow over Cricket Canada’s governance practices and raised questions about due diligence during senior appointments. The ICC is expected to determine its next steps after Cricket Canada responds to its request for information.

Cricket Canada has yet to issue an official statement in response to the ICC’s inquiry.
